This episode of The Darcy And Holly Show is a bit odd. As always, we have Holly's report from Leader Dogs, but the bulk of the show deals with another topic. While we were recording, Darcy's brother came in and read us one of those joke horoscope things you find online. We both thought it was funny, but it did contain language which might be objectionable to some listeners. Ultimately we decided to edit that out, but we do spend a great deal of time discussing whether or not we should have that sort of thing on the show, and if so, should we have a warning beforehand. We don't want to lose listeners, but by the same token, we don't want to feel like we're sensoring ourselves either. To listen, click here. We would really like to get some feedback on this topic. You know me, I'm no fan of
You know me, I'm no fan of censorship. I think with anything, adult language included or no, you risk alienating some listeners with just subject matter. You can't and won't please everybody. I suppose you may have to consider what type of audience you're looking to attract and where your podcast is listed and how they classify it and all that. I think a warning is a good compromise if you know some adult language is going to appear in a given piece. Do you want to do a pretty universally appealing show, or are you interested in appealing more to adults or twenty-somethings. I say do whatever you can just to be yourselves and present yourselves as real as possible in your podcast. This medium is new, so while things are freewheeling, relax and do your thing.
Those were kind of my thoughts as well
Hi. That's basicly how Holly and I look at it, but we wanted to make sure the listeners were on the same page as we were. I think what's happened is that since we've done nothing overtly adult in nature, we're now thought of as a clean, family friendly podcast. Which is probably true 90 percent of the time. However we can't guarantee that will always be the case. I think the solution is going to have to be to have a warning on shows that use language that may offend some listeners. Although, as you say, some people will be offended by anything, language or otherwise.
